As a woman of faith, I’m constantly exploring my relationship with God.  Sometimes it’s hard to remember what he has called me to do, which is to be a mother, a teacher, and an advocate for Him.  How can I set an example for my children if I am lost myself?  Leonard Sweet’s book, I Am a Follower, spoke to my heart.  Sweet promotes the act of followership. He doesn’t
persuade the reader to follow societal norms or figureheads. Instead, he encourages
following the one true leader our world has ever had: Jesus.

Sweet says that we should follow the way of Jesus and “embody
his life in us”.  He speaks of being a
cross-bearer, not a cross-wearer.  Meaning
that instead of having a display of superficial faith around
our necks, we embrace the sacrifice Christ made on the cross and brand our
hearts with the weight the cross carries.

In a time when I struggle as a mother to ensure that I am a Godly woman who
instills my children with faith, I found this book to be encouraging.  Sweet moved me to think about where I stand
in relation to Jesus, instead of where I stand to in comparison with others of
faith.  He reminded me that leading my
children to God isn’t just instruction-based, it’s imitation-based.  The best way to teach my children and others about
God is to draw nearer to Him myself.  I
must remind myself to open up my heart to being chosen by Jesus to do His will
in my live.  One major point that I took
out of I Am a Follower was to focus on walking with Jesus each day instead of
where the journey will take me.  All I
have to do is follow Him, and I’ve nothing to worry about.
